The arts teach children that in complex forms of problem solving, purposes are seldom fixed, but change with circumstance and opportunity. Learning in the arts requires the ability and willingness to surrender to the unanticipated possibilities of the work as it unfolds.

Andrea Downie

Andrea Downie is a dance educator, dance scholar, dance writer and choreographer. She has been on faculty at the Shadbolt Centre for the Arts in Vancouver for the past 12 years and is currently completing her MA in Dance at Toronto’s York University. She also has a BFA in Dance from York University and has completed the professional training program at Dance New Amsterdam in New York City.
While training in New York, Andrea performed with Jody Oberfelder Dance Projects and also completed the Simonson Technique Teacher Training Certification Course. The Simonson Technique is a holistic dance technique founded on anatomically based principles of body awareness and alignment. In addition to being a certified teacher of the Simonson Technique, Andrea is the Course Administrator for, and a certified teacher of C-I Training - a conditioning system developed specifically for dancers. She is also a member of the International Association of Dance Science & Medicine and on the steering committee for Healthy Dancer Canada.
Andrea works actively as a guest instructor at performing arts schools, arts centres and studios throughout BC and Ontario enthusiastically sharing her passion for dance with students of all ages and levels. Her classes are intelligently structured, emphasize anatomically sound movement, and encourage individual expression within a supportive learning environment.
